Makara
Author : Admin ![]() Fourteen-year-old Makara walked into an Operation Renewed Hope medical clinic in Cambodia on crutches. She said she had broken her leg. Upon further examination, doctors determined that she had a rare bone condition, an aneurismal bone cyst. The bone had developed many times the regular size and was filled with air pockets. Due to this condition, she could break her leg simply by walking on it. The solution? Amputate the leg . . . or engage in a complicated, expensive surgery in the United States. God brought a team of people and organizations together to make the surgery possible. On the Cambodian side, an immigration attorney provided his services pro bono to help Makara obtain her visa. Deborah Franco coordinated the efforts in the United States. Raptim Tours, where Deborah works, provided airfare. Orthopedic surgeon Andy Cappucino agreed to perform the surgery free of charge; and Kenmore Mercy Hospital, where Dr. Cappucino and his wife Helen practice, offered their services, staff, and facilities for the surgery. The cooperation of the hospital helped to convince the US embassy to finalize Makara’s visa. Donated services are estimated to have totaled above $50,000.
On March 19, 2009, Makara received the surgery she could never have hoped to receive just months ago. She has new goals in life. She had been unable to attend school due to her condition, but she now wants to learn English well enough to teach in Phnom Penh. Deborah Franco praised God for doing what “absolutely no man . . . could have done;” He made the impossible happen through the faith and teamwork of His people.
